Black History Month

MATSE celebrates Black scientists

Black scientists have achieved and contributed to our world in so many ways from launching us into space, to discovering new disease treatments, to developing world-changing technologies – just to name a few.

Black people are too-often forgotten or unrecognized in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields as a result of systemic racism. In honor of Black History Month, MatSE celebrated a sample of the amazing Black scientists that have made a lasting impact in materials science and engineering.

This program highlighted: Michael Williams, Martha Euphemia Lofton Haynes, Sossina Haile, Mary Elliott Hill, and Lynden A. Archer.

2021 celebrating Black scientists

On February 23, 2021, MatSE volunteers presented the works of a few Black scientists that have made lasting contributions in materials science and engineering. This program was offered through Zoom and was intended an invitation to learn more about the great and vast accomplishments of Black scientists from throughout history and present day.
